What Is a Spirit-Filled Church? | Overflow Church Las Vegas
What Is a Spirit-Filled Church?
What does someone mean when they say a church is Spirit-filled?
You may have heard churches described as Pentecostal, charismatic, Spirit-led, full gospel, revival-focused, or presence-driven.
Sometimes those terms overlap.
But being Spirit-filled should mean much more than having a particular style of music or an emotional church service.
At Overflow Church in Las Vegas, being Spirit-filled means we believe the Holy Spirit is present and active in the Church today.
We believe the Bible.
We believe Jesus Christ is Lord.
We believe in salvation through Jesus.
We believe prayer matters.
We believe discipleship matters.
And we believe the Holy Spirit still works through His people.
A Spirit-Filled Church Expects God to Be Present
Christianity was never intended to become a religious routine where people talk about God without expecting Him to move.
Throughout Scripture, the presence of God changes things.
People repent.
People receive direction.
Broken lives are restored.
People experience freedom.
Sick people are prayed for.
Believers are strengthened.
The gospel is proclaimed with power.
During Pastor Aaron Pino’s Set Time for Favor message, he prayed that people would not merely hear words intellectually, but that the Word of God would go deep into their spirits and produce genuine transformation.
That expectation is important to us.
Church should not simply provide information about God.
We want people to encounter Him.
Spirit-Filled Does Not Mean Bible-Lite
Some people assume you have to choose.
Either you have strong biblical teaching or you have the supernatural.
Either you value doctrine or you value the Holy Spirit.
Either you have structure or you have spiritual power.
We reject that choice.
The Holy Spirit inspired Scripture.
A genuine move of the Spirit will never require us to abandon the Word He inspired.
We want the Word of God.
We want the presence of God.
We want discipleship.
We want prayer.
We want biblical doctrine.
We want spiritual gifts.
We want order.
And we want the power of the Holy Spirit.

A Spirit-Filled Church Believes the Holy Spirit Still Moves
The book of Acts presents the Holy Spirit as actively involved in the life of believers.
He empowers.
He speaks.
He guides.
He gives spiritual gifts.
He helps believers pray.
He gives boldness to preach the gospel.
He points people toward Jesus.
We do not believe Christians were supposed to experience the Holy Spirit in the first century and then spend the rest of church history merely reading about what used to happen.
We believe God still moves today.
A Spirit-Filled Church Prays for Healing
Jesus consistently ministered to sick and hurting people.
The early Church continued praying for healing.
James instructed believers to pray for the sick.
That is one reason we still pray.
Our confidence is not in a preacher.
Our confidence is not in emotion.
Our confidence is not in a particular method.
Our confidence is in Jesus Christ.
During the Set Time for Favor sermon, Pastor Aaron shared testimonies involving his own family and people who had received prayer at Overflow Church. Those testimonies were presented as reminders that Christians should continue praying and trusting God.
We do not believe faith means ignoring responsible medical care.
We simply believe Christians should never stop praying because a situation appears difficult.
A Spirit-Filled Church Makes Room for the Gifts of the Spirit
First Corinthians 12 describes gifts given by the Holy Spirit.
The New Testament speaks about prophecy, tongues, interpretation of tongues, gifts of healing, faith, words of wisdom, words of knowledge, discernment, and miracles.
These gifts are not trophies that make one Christian more spiritual than another.
They are given to serve people and glorify Jesus.
Everything should be done biblically.
Everything should point to Christ.
And everything should ultimately build up the Church.
A Spirit-Filled Church Takes Worship Seriously
For us, worship is not simply the opening portion of a service before the sermon begins.
Worship is ministry to the Lord.
Sometimes worship is joyful and loud.
Sometimes it is quiet and deeply personal.
Sometimes there is prayer.
Sometimes people respond at the altar.
The goal is never emotionalism for its own sake.
The goal is Jesus.
We want to give the Holy Spirit room to work in people’s hearts.
What Should You Expect at a Spirit-Filled Church?
Every church has its own personality, but at a healthy Spirit-filled church you should expect to see:
Biblical preaching.
Passionate worship.
Prayer.
Expectation.
People responding to God.
A belief that the gifts of the Holy Spirit remain relevant.
A desire to see lives transformed by Jesus.
And an emphasis on experiencing God without abandoning biblical truth.
