What does it actually mean to have the favor of God?

For some people, favor has become another word for getting something good. A promotion comes through. An unexpected door opens. Someone gives you an opportunity you did not expect.

Those things can certainly be expressions of favor, but biblical favor goes much deeper.

Romans 5:1-2 teaches that through faith in Jesus Christ, believers have access into grace, or the favor of God, in which we stand.

That means the favor of God begins with Jesus.

We do not earn our way into God’s family. We do not achieve enough, behave well enough, or work hard enough to convince God to accept us.

Jesus made the way.

Because of His sacrifice, those who place their faith in Christ can come into a restored relationship with God.

That is favor.

You do not have to live wondering whether God wants you near Him.

Through Jesus, you have been invited into relationship with Him.

Favor Is More Than Luck

There is a major difference between biblical favor and luck.

Luck is random.

Favor has a source.

The Christian does not look at every blessing and simply say, “I got lucky.”

We recognize that every good thing ultimately points us back to the goodness and grace of God.

Psalm 5:12 says that the Lord blesses the righteous and surrounds them with favor like a shield.

That is a powerful picture.

God’s favor does not simply touch one isolated area of your life. Scripture describes favor as something that surrounds the righteous.

You can believe God for favor in your family.

Favor in your career.

Favor in your business.

Favor in relationships.

Favor as you fulfill the assignment God has placed on your life.

But there is another dimension of favor that cannot be ignored.

The Secret Ingredient Is Obedience

One of the central truths in The Favor Factor message series at Overflow Church is this:

Radical favor is often waiting on the other side of radical obedience.

God’s favor is not something we manipulate through good behavior. We are saved by grace through faith, not by works.

But Scripture repeatedly shows us men and women who received instruction from God and responded with obedience.

Their obedience positioned them to experience what God had already prepared.

Think about Noah.

God gave Noah instructions that did not make sense according to anything Noah had previously experienced.

Build an ark.

Prepare for a flood.

Gather your family.

Follow the instructions exactly.

Genesis 6:22 tells us that Noah did everything God commanded him to do.

Noah did not need to understand every detail before obeying.

He needed to trust the One who had spoken.

Obedience Does Not Always Feel Comfortable

One reason people struggle to obey God is because we often associate the will of God with what feels familiar.

But God may ask you to do something unfamiliar.

He may challenge your comfort.

He may ask you to forgive someone.

Start something.

Stop something.

Give something.

Go somewhere.

Reconcile a relationship.

Trust Him with an area of your life you have been trying to control.

The fact that something feels uncomfortable does not automatically mean God is not in it.

Sometimes obedience requires trusting what God sees rather than depending only on what we can see.

Proverbs 3 tells us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and not lean entirely on our own understanding.

Faith says, “God, I trust You even when I cannot see the whole picture.”

Obedience puts that faith into action.

What Was the Last Thing God Told You?

Many Christians are praying for a new word from God while ignoring the last instruction He gave them.

“God, speak to me.”

“God, show me what to do next.”

“God, open the next door.”

But sometimes the question is not whether God has spoken.

The question is whether we responded.

What was the last thing God put in your heart to do?

Have you done it?

Your next season may not require another revelation.

It may require a response.

Give God Your Yes

The foundational yes begins with Jesus Christ.

God has extended salvation to humanity through His Son, but receiving that gift requires a response.

We say yes to Jesus.

Then, as followers of Christ, we continue learning how to say yes to God.

Yes when it is easy.

Yes when it stretches us.

Yes when we understand.

Yes when we do not understand every detail.

Yes when obedience is comfortable.

And yes when obedience costs something.
