Child Water
Baptism
We're so excited you're considering water baptism for your child. Here's how to know if they're ready and how to prepare together.
Every Child Can
Walk With Jesus
In Overflow Kids, we lead children into walking with Jesus daily, and baptism is a powerful step in that journey. We encourage parents to wait until their child expresses a desire to be baptized. That hunger is often a sign they're ready.
Children under seven may not fully understand or remember the significance of baptism, so we recommend waiting until they can grasp what this decision represents.
What Water
Baptism Is
All About
Watch this short video with your child. It explains water baptism in a simple way and gives you a great place to begin the conversation.
Three Questions To
Ask Your Child
To Follow Jesus?
They should be able to share a moment when they understood who Jesus is and chose to follow Him.
Baptism Mean?
It means I'm following Jesus. It means I belong to Him. It shows others what He has done in my heart.
To Be Baptized?
Because Jesus was baptized. Because I love Him and want to follow Him. Because I want to live for Him.
That's Okay.
No Pressure.
Let them watch baptisms. Talk about it. Keep pointing them to Jesus. This is a journey, not a moment to rush.
Prepare
Together
Walk through the devotional below together as you prepare for this special step.
Water Baptism
Devotional
Three short readings. Take one each day, read the Scripture aloud together, talk through it, and then ask the question.
Jesus
“Go and make disciples of all nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey everything I have commanded you… And I am with you always.” — Matthew 28:19–20
Baptism is one of the first steps of obedience in following Jesus. He was baptized, and He told us to do the same. Read about His baptism together in Matthew 3:13–17.
Ask Why is water baptism important?
Expression
“When you were baptized, you were buried with Christ… and raised to life with Him through faith.” — Colossians 2:12
Baptism is a picture. It shows on the outside what Jesus has done on the inside. Going under the water represents the old life being buried. Coming up represents new life in Christ.
Ask What does water baptism represent?
Of Faith
“We were buried with Him through baptism into death… so we too may live a new life.” — Romans 6:4
Baptism doesn't save us. Jesus does. But baptism is a public declaration: “I belong to Jesus.” It becomes a marker your child can look back on for the rest of their life.
Ask What decision are you making when you are baptized?
Ready For
This Step?
When your child understands what baptism means and is ready to take this step, we would love to celebrate this moment with your family.
