CHILD WATER BAPTISM
We’re so excited that you’re considering water baptism for your child!
At Overflow Church, we believe every child can have a real, personal relationship with Jesus. In Overflow Kids, we don’t just teach children about Jesus—we lead them into walking with Him daily, hearing His voice, and growing in their own faith. Water baptism is a powerful step in that journey. We encourage parents to wait until their child begins expressing a desire to be water baptized. That hunger is often a sign they’re ready, and that this moment will truly mark something meaningful in their walk with God.
While children under the age of seven can absolutely experience Jesus, they may not fully understand or remember the significance of baptism. Because of that, we recommend waiting until they are a little older and able to grasp what this decision represents. As you pray and discern if your child is ready, here are a few simple questions you can ask:
When did you decide to follow Jesus?
Your child should be able to share a moment where they understood who Jesus is and chose to follow Him. It might have happened at church, at home, or even in a quiet moment by themselves.
What does water baptism mean?
It means I’m following Jesus. It means I belong to Him. It shows others what He has done in my heart.
Why do you want to be water baptized?
Because Jesus was baptized. Because I love Him and want to follow Him. Because I want to live for Him.
IF YOUR CHILD IS NOT READY
If you feel your child doesn’t fully understand yet, that’s okay. There’s no pressure. Let them watch baptisms. Talk about it. Keep pointing them to Jesus. This is a journey, not a moment to rush.
IF YOUR CHILD IS READY
If your child understands and is ready, we’d love for you to walk through the devotional below together as you prepare for this special step.
WATER BAPTISM DEVOTIONAL
Obeying Jesus
“Go and make disciples of all nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey everything I have commanded you… And I am with you always.”
— Matthew 28:19–20
Water baptism is one of the first steps of obedience in following Jesus. We don’t just believe in Him—we follow Him. Jesus Himself was baptized, and He told us to do the same. When we choose baptism, we’re saying, “I’m going to follow Jesus with my life.” Take time to read about Jesus’ baptism together in Matthew 3:13–17.
Question: Why is water baptism important?
2. An Outward Expression
“When you were baptized, you were buried with Christ… and raised to life with Him through faith.”
— Colossians 2:12
Water baptism is a picture. It shows on the outside what Jesus has already done on the inside. Jesus died, was buried, and rose again. When we gave our lives to Him, something changed in us. Our old life was left behind, and we were made new. Going under the water represents the old life being buried. Coming up out of the water represents new life in Christ.
Question: What does water baptism represent?
3. A Step of Faith
“We were buried with Him through baptism into death… so we too may live a new life.”
— Romans 6:4
Water baptism doesn’t save us—Jesus does. But baptism is a powerful step of faith after we’ve decided to follow Him. It’s a public declaration that says: “I belong to Jesus.” “I’m choosing His way.” “I’m living a new life.” This moment becomes a marker your child can look back on—a reminder of the day they chose to follow Jesus fully.
